It was so because earlier they thought that Muslims were the reason for the First war of Independence in India and were rude and arrogant towards them. However, after some years they realized that this attitude towards them would worsen the situation and they changed their attitude later and became friendly towards Muslims. They did so because they wanted to divide the Hindus and Muslims and wanted to extend their rule in India.
