The British wanted the tribal communities to settle down because:

1. the British were not comfortable with semi-nomadic people and those who did not have a permanent home.

2. the British were of the opinion that it is easier to monitor, administer and control people who were settled.

3. they also wanted a fixed income and settling the tribal communities would ensure a fixed agricultural produce and thus a fixed revenue.

Answer:

EUROPEAN FORESTERS REGARDED SHIFTING AGRICULTURE AS HARMFUL

  • They felt that land which was used for cultivation every few years could not grow commercial crops.
  • There was a danger of forest fire.
  • The cultivators who practiced shifting cultivation used to migrate from one region to another so it made it difficult for the government to collect taxes.

Due to these reasons government decided to ban shifting cultivation.

  • As a result many forest communities were forced to leave homes in the forest.
  • Many had to change their occupations.
