The British wanted to look how much they have expanded, that is how much monopoly have the British spread overy India. These were recorded and carefully preserved in record rooms.

The British felt the need to survey in India due to the following reasons-  

1. As they expanded their trade in India to gain profit, the surveys were helpful in analysing how much they had expanded.

2. After surveying, revenue collection and mapping of places for the British became easier.  

3. Land surveys helped them to know about the important states and the number of princely states and administer them.

4. Land surveys also helped them to know about the population, occupations and fertile land available for agriculture. This, in turn, helped them to increase their trade for commercial crops.
