Many countries smuggled opium TO China , to Canton only from Macau though Jardine Mathieson cut out the middlemen by going into other ports. Look at a picture of what was called the Canton Factories.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Delano family got rich selling opium for the American Russell company, American opium came from Smyrna Turkey and was of worse quality

UK sent the McCartney and Amhurst missions to try and open China for peaceful trade but they failed. The Emperor wanted few things from the west silver, mechanical toys, American ginseng pacific otter skins

Mr Fortune had no brought tea to India , the trade of the world would not be balanced

China and the whole world was using opium , Q Victoria took it Clive of India overdosed on it, British poets overused it, in those days of pre modern medicine it was the best painkiller, Bowring wrote a biography of his uncle Bowring 4 governor of HongKong , in it he says UK consumption of opium was the same per capita as China

Opium in of itself is not at the time evil , its how you use it, the world ate it , the Chinese feeling oppressed by the Manchurian Qing they decided to smoke it

So the trade worked by Brits, Yanks Indians…. brought opium to China to Canton exchanged it for silver, used silver to buy tea , ceramics silk…..

Please remember that prior to OW1 , after Canton every sale was Chinese to Chinese
