It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, unlike the modern time, there were no cameras, everything was recorded either in writing or painting. The painting was very popular in the old times. When the British traders and rulers traveled to India, they brought with them the idea of realism. It means that the artists used to depict everything like real life. They used oil painting to paint which made the pictures appear real.

History painting was another kind of imperial art. The painters depicted episodes of British imperial history was also projected through paintings. These paintings were considered of high repute amongst the British public. These paintings were a showcase of valor and power that Britishers enjoyed in India.

These kind of paintings were an attempt to create a public memory of imperial triumphs. British rulers used these paintings to show their victory so that it gets engraved in the history of the world.
