Answer: The British took surveys as they believed that to administer a country one must be knowledgeable about it. Britishers would take detailed surveys on India to know about the topography,soil quality,the flora and the fauna, etc. it became a common practice in India as surveys like census help the government fetch important information like the population of different castes and religion, no. of illiterate , no. of literate etc.
for eg. Land Surveys usually are very critically important for the construction of various building.
Hence we come to a conclusion that surveys are very important and helpful , hence they are a common practice in India.
