British wanted to take over Rani Lakshmi Bai's Kingdom on the basis of Doctrine of Lapse which means that a kingdom will be taken under the rule of British empire if it doesn't have any heir or a present king.
And as we know Rani Lakshmi Bai did not have any real son. However they have adopted one.
