why did the caste system change over time

It became much more rigid over time - the original idea of caste was never hereditary or hierarchical. 

It was merely an ancient form of division of labour based on age and ability. We all use this concept of division of labour in modern society to have a more productive company or national economy. 

In the ancient times an individual could change caste easily just by changing his/her occupation.
