There was a time when the trees of the slope of hills were cutting down very fastly. Then the people their thought that the trees also have life. So the people starting hugging the tree so that the woodcutters has to cut them first for cutting the trees.
So that's how chipko movement started

Explanation: In 1973, the villagers in the Alaknanda river valley of Uttarakhand protested against the indiscriminate cutting down of trees. They did so by hugging the trees in order to save them from being cut down. This movement became famous a the Chipko Movement.
