why did the colonial start commercial forest in india

1)  British needed forests to build ships and railways. They were worried that the extensive use of forests by local people would destroy them.  

2)  Hence, they invited a German expert Brandis for advice who was made the first Inspector General of Forests in India  

3)  Brandis felt that a proper system has to be introduced to manage forests and people had to be trained in conservation of the same. Thus, rules about the use of forests resources were framed. Felling of trees and grazing had to be restricted so that forests could be preserved for timber production.
