Why did the dutch adopted the scorched earth policy during war?

The ducth followed a scorched earth policy ,  they destroyed sawmills and burnt huge piles of giant teak logs so that they wont fall in the japanese hands.

They followed this policy so that the japanese people could not use the valuable timber for their own war need.
