Thus poverty during the colonial period was due to the exploitation, unfavourable land onwnership system, lack of basic amenities to lead the life, low per capita income etc. ... Because even with an increase in the national income, PCI, there was no change in the standard of living, inequality and poverty.

because the British were exploiting Indian resources and use it for their own benefit in their own country
the British would led the Indians to do hard labour and pay them less as most parts of India was under British rule the Indians were discriminated in their own country and payed less salaries
