why did the east india company want to destroy the marathas if they took the help of the marathas itself in defeating tipu sultans army in the battle of seringapatam?​

because the eic (east india company) wanted to rule the whole india by taking marathas power they could crush tipu sultan and then rule over the other smaller kingdoms because tipu sultan was a very strong leader at tht time . so if they needed rule 1st they shud smeones power to fight then after winning they cud destroy others also

They thought that allying with them to fight against tipu sultan would weaken them after the war and after the battle which means 1 year after which means at 1800 nana phadnavis died who kept the maratha confederacy united . The maratha empire got divided due to which there was no unity between the 5 maratha states and eventually the British got advantage and defeated them
