Why did the Eli's not want to be so hard on defeated Germany

Due to the Allies incurring huge losses from the World wars, they thought that if Germany was humiliated again, in a few years, they would be take revenge by staging another World war which the Allies didn't want to happen. So they weren't much hard on Germany after the World war II.
