Hence, the European employers found it difficult to recruit labour in Africa. The European then used the following methods to retain labour:
Heavy taxes were imposed on the Africans which could be paid only if they work for wages.
Efforts were made to displace peasants from land. Only one member of a family was allowed to inherit land. This forced other members of the family to work for earning wages.
