Explanation:
They wanted to find a sea route so it could be virtually faster. I know this seems kind of counter-intuitive because it might be faster to walk across Asia versus sailing across approximately three quarters of the world, but this isn’t necessarily a cause for problem.
Think about someone who’s in Spain, or maybe Southern Italy or France on the Mediterranean. Two other things of concern: trading was happening a lot in the East Indies/ Far East, and Hong Kong was a big trading spot once the West got cozy with China.
Back to being on a body of water, you mightn’t want to walk all the way from, say, the port of Palos de la Frontera, Spain to the Silk Road, and then some to China. Since a city like that is closer to the West, you would want to take a boat from there to the West and go to China there. Not necessarily faster or cheaper, but it spares a lot of time, for you don’t have to stop for breaks, or stop every night.
Little known fact, Palos de la Frontera was where Columbus sailed from, and he, obviously went on to discover the Caribbean. That is why the Caribbean is often also referred to as the West Indies.
