Why did the French introduce modern education in vietnam

the vietnamese people were illiterate. it was a big problem for the french. so they wantes the vietnamese to be educated who in turn would benefit the french. so the french started educating the vietnamese. but in their system of education, the high school was taught in french, and the system of colonialism was justified as well as the french was glorified.
