Answer: The glum-faced man tells that Mr Easton was taking him to prison to save Mr  Easton from embarrassment and to prevent Miss Fairchild from discovering the truth about Mr Easton. When Miss Fairchild sees the handcuff on Mr Easton's hands, her glad look is changed into a bewildered horror. The glow faded from her cheeks and her lips parted in a vague, relaxing distress. The glum-faced man had been watching her countenance with veiled glances from his keen, shrewd eyes. Therefore he stops Mr Easton from telling anything and tells that Mr Easton was taking him to Leavenworth Prison.
