Why did the government ban shifting cultivation? What was the result?

They felt that land which was used for cultivation every few years could not grow trees for railway timber. When a forest was burnt, there was the added danger of the flames spreading and burning valuable timber. ... Therefore, the government decided to ban shifting cultivation.

Answer:

1) It would take up lot of space, when so much land is wasted there will be not enough space to grow the country's infrastructure.(ex.building hospitals , schools,offices etc.

2) Shifting cultivation involved burning of land as it is not as fertile anymore this affects the health of the environment.
