Why did the grandmother accompany the narrator to his school?what did she do there?

The grandmother accompanied the narrator for two reasons. The first was the school was attached to a temple. As the narrator learnt his lessons from the temple priest, she sat in the temple reading the scriptures. Secondly, the narrator at that time was quite young. She accompanied him for security purposes. As there were many stray dogs, they might pose threat to the narrator.
