Why did the grandmother take to feeding sparrows in the courtyard in their city house?

In the city, the grandson used to go school, in English medium school by bus/van .So, grandmother didn't get chance to go with him and feed street dogs like village.

So, she take to feeding sparrows in the countryard of the city, to spent her time .
