• A huge asteroid or comet hit the earth

• There occurred a massive volcanic eruption

Either way, a lot of dust was produced which covered the skies and the sunlight to the earth was blocked. Due to the absence of sunlight, photosynthesis couldn’t occur and the whole food chain was disturbed. Gases also rose causing change in temperature and eventually death of the dinosaurs.
