It was all about British rule and oppression against Indians. Halagall hunters refused to lay down their weapons to British rulers, hence, they initiated a revolt.  

British rulers declared their new protocol that all the village people of Halagall have to surrender their weapons to British authority, which they refused to obey. Their mass refusal took the shape of revolt.
