it is because it was a cash crop so no food can be obtained and British pays them low. SO they have nothing to eat. it also destroy the fertility of ground because of that no crops can be grown afterwards.

Indigo plants need a tropical climate to grow in, making India the ideal place to grow indigo.....and bullocks , which either the poor farmers don't have, or were busy in the rice fields.
