why did the indian rulers fall to check the british ambitions

The English debuted as traders and merchants under the banner of the East India Company (EIC), which was granted exclusive trading rights in the lands to the east.
The EIC was very clear about its objective-to secure its commercial interests at all costs. They could not make much headway in this regard until after the death of the Mughal emperor, Alamgir Aurangzeb in 1707 CE.
The changed political environment made it easier for the EIC to involve itself in local politics in order to secure their commercial interests. This was specially true in Bengal, where the company had significant business interests.
This, then was the background and the beginning of the company’s involvement in the politics of the region.
The French were late entrants in the race for securing commercial interests here. By 1740 CE, they managed to control Pondicherry (modern day UT of Puducheri) & Karaikal on the Coromandel Coast, Mahe on the Malabar coast and Chandannagore in Bengal.
