Sepoys in India in British era don't travel through sea because at that time it was the culture in India that no body will pass through the sea. (Now it can be called Myth) . If he do so than after death his soul will go into hell.

This was also one of the reasons why mutiny of 1857 started as British declare that if they are posted anywhere they will have to go either it is sea or land.

Reason behind this was that Indians has one of the oldest civilization in the world. If we talk about the geography of the India, In North there is Great Himalayas, in South there was a huge sea, In East there was Bay of Bengal and In West there was Thar desert. So at the starting of the civilization they were kept closed inside the boundaries made by nature. Primarily they think that we will go to hell after death if we cross all those walls of nature but as time passes this thing was only bounded to sea. And now says Indian army can go anywhere anytime.

I hope that it will clear your doubts
