The Indians failed in the struggle of 1857 because of it's localised character. Many princerly states like Hyderabad, Mysore,etc did not joined the rebels. The Bengal province, the Madras presidency and the states of Rajputana also stayed away from the battle. On the other hand the princes of sikh in Panjab actively supported the British rather than the rebels.
