The intruder wanted to assume Gerard’s identity because both of them were similar in many ways. The former felt that if he wore the latter’s clothes, as well as did and met all people that Gerard used to, no one would recognize him. As he was actually a murderer, the intruder firmly believed that by doing all this, there was no way he would get caught by the police for the crime that he had completed.
