Why did the intruder prepare himself to take up the identity of Gerrard?

the intruder had been observing Gerard for some time, he noticed Gerard wasn't the kind of person he would have that big of a problem taking up his identity. The intruder knew he would get caught so he decided to disguise or steal Gerard's identity so as to fool people into believing he was Gerard himself so he wouldn't get caught by the cops.
