Jewellery becomes black on exposure to air for sometime. When these articles( particularly silver) exposed to air it reacts with sulphur present in the atmosphere and form a black layer of silver sulphide on the surface.
Copper articles get tarnished by reacting with air and water. Due to this, a layer is formed over copper vessels. This layer mainly contains black copper oxide and green copper hydroxide.
The jewellery reacts with the atmospheric gases and form a black layer.
This process is called CORROSION.
