When the jewellery is exposed to air it reacts with atmospheric gases which causes them to undergo corrosion by forming a layer of compounds on it's surface.

This process is known as corrosion.

Jewellery becomes black on exposure to air for sometime. When these articles( particularly silver) exposed to air it reacts with sulphur present in the atmosphere and form a black layer of silver sulphide on the surface.

Copper articles get tarnished by reacting with air and water. Due to this, a layer is formed over copper vessels. This layer mainly contains black copper oxide and green copper hydroxide.

The jewellery reacts with the atmospheric gases and form a black layer.

This process is called CORROSION.

hope it helps✌
