Answer :
In the short story 'The Tale of Melon City' by Vikram Seth, the king ordered the chief of builders to construct an arch. However, the arch got built too low. When the King passed through the arch, his crown collided with the side of the arch and as a result, fell from his head. This infuriated the king and he ordered the chief of builders to be hanged.
The following lines from the poem provide the answer :
'The King rode down the thoroughfare
To edify spectators there.
Under the arch he lost his crown.
The arch was built too low. A frown
Appeared upon his placid face.
The King said, ‘This is a disgrace.
The chief of builders will be hanged.’
The rope and gallows were arranged.'
