The landlord wanted to eject Griffin from his house for various reasons. He did not like Griffin’s mysterious experimentation and the apparatuses, which kept making unpleasant noises. Then the Griffin stole a neighbor’s cat to do experiment on it; the landlord suspected Griffin had vivisected the cat.

The landlord’s suspicion grew stronger and stronger; Griffin’s offences and rudeness also made the landlord angry. Finally, he got a legal notice from the court to eject Griffin. Griffin was in a very tight situation on account of the landlord.

In order to take revenge from the landlord, Griffin set his house on fire.
