On the May 10, 1857 a great revolt was sparked off in Meerut. The nationalist termed it India's first war of independence, however the British historians preferred to call it sepoy mutiny. The most severe outburst of discontent against the British Empire was The Mutiny proper began at Meerut on 10 May 1857 when 85 members of the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry, who had been jailed for refusing to use the new cartridges, were broken out of prison by their comrades. They ransacked the nearby military station and killed any Europeans they could find.heard in MAfter failing to incite his comrades into an open and active rebellion, Mangal Pandey tried to take his own life, by placing his musket to his chest and pulling the trigger with his toe.
