Answer :

In the poem 'Snake,' the narrator went to the water-trough in order to fill his pitcher with water as it was a hot day. There, he saw the snake already having his fill of water. The poet was well mannered and so he allowed the snake to quench his thirst first as he was present at the water-trough before him. Moreover, he considered the snake as a 'guest' and so, he acted as a good host and let his guest drink first.
