Well, the narrator found out the boys' secret and didn't want the boys to find that out . He wanted them to feel that they had kept their secret well and the boys didn't talk on their way back home as they were serious and determined that they had to hold out on the narrator, perhaps they'd realised that they had to be strong in this harsh world and moreover they weren't feeling quite comfortable as well.
