Why did the narrator ask the woman " do u know me" in "the address"

The narrator asked the woman (Mrs Dorling) if she knew the narrator. The narrator had met her in the early times of the war , when she visited her mother and often left with suitcases full of precious belongings of her mother. The narrator had now grown up and wondered if Mrs Dorling would have remembered her , having meet her only once .
