The narrator volunteer to do the packing because of the following reasons.

• The narrator had volunteered to do the packing for his mother who was old, he knew that she will not be able to do her packing on her own.
• The narrator also knew that a mother would miss on or forget to carry important items with her along with her medicines to London.
• The narrator's mother going to London to meet his elder son who had been residing in London for the past 11 years therefore this time she was going to spend some quality time with her elder son as she was missing him.
