The narrator becomes absent-minded and got lost in his thoughts. The captain was unable to regain and maintain his strength. His temper saw an increment and he became more violent, becoming absentminded.

The narrator didn't have time to think about the captain because of the sudden death of his father. After which he got busy with the natural distress, visits of the neighbours, arranging the funeral and carrying out all the work of the inn.
