The Bridge Builder is all about unselfish action. In the poem when the builder crosses by a highway he comes across a chasm.
Being an experienced person, with years of experience in travelling on highways and passing similar chasms, he realizes that he can pass the chasm without being harmed but he is concerned of the safety of the young, inexperienced companion with him.
