Pandya influence peaked in Jatavarman Sundara Pandya's reign 1251-1268 A.D. After forces from the Delhi sultanate invaded Madurai in 1311, the Pandyas declined into merely local rulers. ... Religion and state involvement in it were an important buttress to the Pandyan dynasty.
