Aunt Ruby was never loved by the parakeet as she used to taunt and tease the bird. She could only stare sourly at everyone from his cage. Inspite of innumerable attempts made by the household members,the parrot refused to talk.
Aunt Ruby had purchased the bird from a bird-catcher who would visited the locality frequently. The bird catcher would sell various types of birds ranging from colourful budgerigars to mynas and sparrows . She would keep the bird caged inspite a strong disliking by her granny and grandfather as they preferred them not to be kept as pets.
Aunty would try all tricks to make the parrot respond but the bird would back away at every attempt. In one such instance she tried to kiss the bird to which the parrot responded with anger .
The incidence from the short story by Ruskin Bond shows that the parrot never loved aunt Ruby. She used to taunt parakeet.
The family got the parrot from the bird-catcher.
Since the day, the parrot came in, every member of the family tried different ways to make him speak, but the parrot refused to all the attempts.
