Why did the peasant in awadh rebel against the zamindars and talukdars?
Answers
Answer:
The peasants in Awadh rebelled against the Zamindars and Talukdars in order to be met with their demands.
Explanation:
The peasant movement was led under the leadership of Baba Ramchandra. The peasant movement demanded reduction in revenue, abolition of begar and social boycott of oppressive landlords. In many places Nai-dhobi bandhs were set up by panchayats to deny any sort of services to the landlords. This included even the landlords of barbers and washer-men.
In June 1920, Jawaharlal Nehru went around the villages in Awadh to get to know the people and their problems. By October, Oudh kisan-sabha was set up which was led by Jawaharlal Nehru and Baba Ramchandra and few others. And around 300 branches were set up within a month around the villages. As the movement spread, the houses of talukdars and merchants were thrashed. Bazaars were looted, and grain hoards were taken over.
