They participated because the ruler of awadh..... Nawab WajidAli khan was was arrested on the basis of maladministration by the ruler..... So the people became rebelliions

The peasant movement in Awadh was initially started by Baba Ramchandra. The main reason for the starting of this movement was that the peasants were treated like beggars, and they were placed in situation where they were shunt of income but were prone to pay more taxes to landlords. They were demanding a relief to all these problems.  

In the mean while as Gandhi started non-cooperation movement, the peasants of Awadh participated in it.
