Edla did not think it proper to chase away human being whom they had invited to the house and promise Christmas cheer. She understood the reality of the peddler's life and wanted him to enjoy a day with them.

Secondly he had stolen 30 kronor from the crofter .Thus he became quite alarmed .He realised that going to the ironmaster's residence would be like throwing himself voluntarily into the lion's den .So the peddler decline the invitation .
