Bastar is a tribal region in the state of Chhattisgarh inhabited by Gonds, Marias, Dhurwas and other communities. The main reasons for the rebellion against the British were:
(1) The people of Bastar lived in harmony with nature and were dependent on forest products for their survival. But the colonial forest policy reserved two-thirds of the forests and displaced the people from their villages that came within the boundary of the forests.
(2) People were prohibited from hunting and collecting forest products for their personal use.
(3) The colonial forest policy of putting a ban on shifting cultivation created survival crisis for the people of Bastar.
The revolt was crushed brutally by the British. The only victory for the villagers was that the colonial government reduced the 'reserved forest' by half from two- thirds.
