Why did the people of India thought of Gandhi as a messiah or a divine being?

Mahatma Gandi was a man of divine as he was the one who united Indians as one against the British who controlled India . He lead India to many movements like non - violence and satyagraha he was held with great esteem and respect and was the one who evoked the spirit of patriotism in indians.
