First of all, let us talk about the varna system.

The Brahmins (or priests) divided the people according to their occupations and the varnas (caste).

\boxed {\bf {\purple {VARNA\ SYSTEM}}}

There were 4 divisions in the varna system (or caste system):

  • Brahmins - They were the priests, intellectuals, and teachers who used to study and teach vedas.
  • Khastriya - Khastriyas were the warriors and kings. Basically they were the protectors of their kingdoms and the people.
  • Vaishyas - Vaishyas were the traders, farmers and money lenders.
  • Shudras - They were the labourers and artisans.

At the lowest rung of the caste system were the untouchables (or harijans as described by Mahatma Gandhi).

Moving on to your question now,

Question:

Why did the people oppose the Varna system?

Answer:

Many people were against this division of the caste system. They felt that everyone is a human and should be treated equally, must get justice, and shouldn't be discriminated on any grounds. Some people felt that there shouldn't be differences amongst people on the basis of their occupations.

In the Varna system, the Brahmins and Khastriyas enjoyed most of their rights and freedom. But it wasn't as same for Vaishyas and Shudras. The Shudras didn't get many rights, they used to live in slums, and the upper castes used to discriminate them, because they thought that the work that is done by the Shudras was often considered to be "polluting".
