The poet was very humble and well mannered.
He allowed the snake to stay on his trough as the day was very hot.
The snake was thirsty, and the poet considered it as a guest.
A good host always entertains its guests, and the poet did the same thing as being a perfect host to the snake.

The smoke arrived before the poet came and was an
honoured guest, that’s why the poet waited for the
snake to quench its thirst first.
