Why did the poet not have the courage to kill the snake

because the snake was very calm but his knowledge about about the snakes made his mind a little different after sometime he took a log and threw at the snake and he was unhappy for his decision as it was a very mean act .....which made the poet sad and later also he had wondered if the snake would ever return to his place to drink water
