Why did the poor women not understand at Ramarao house .

At Rama Rao's house his son came out of the house to buy a bundle of firewood but he didn't have change to buy that. He only had large amounts so he told the seller to come next day by which time she would be able to procure the money. The poor, woman didn't understand the word "change" and went away muttering to herself.

I would like to mention that with this incident the narrator wants to show the influence of English in his village i.e., Hosahalli.
